Pets
Trying to go plastic free or zero waste with pets can be a challenge. Coming from a background in animal rescue I have given a lot of thought to the products we purchase for our companion animals.
Here are some tips for helping you lessen your impact while caring for your animals:
Invest in quality metal or ceramic bowls - avoid plastic.
Opt for a stainless steel litter box, they are not marketed as a litter box but this is what I use.
Use compostable bags for poop bags or scooping litter.
Make your own pet food.
Look for pet food in bulk. Avoid the plastic sacks of pet food.
Consider the packaging when buying your animal supplies, avoid plastic packaging.
Choose cat litter that is made of paper, corn, wheat, pine, bamboo, walnut, grass, or coconut. I search for products that are natural, biodegradable and packaged in a non-plastic bag. I like Yesterday’s News made from recycled newspaper.
Check to see if your local waste management company offers compostable options for pet waste.
For toys try natural rubber toys.
Opt for a non-toxic flea control.
