Events | Minimizing the Impact

One thing that makes me smile is witnessing the positive impact of a thoughtfully organized eco-friendly event. So much of being environmentally thoughtful is changing our habits, thankfully there are practices and companies out there that can help make this transition a seamless one. Events can be everything from a birthday party to a non-profit fundraiser, a marathon, school event, concert, auction or a business gathering.

Here are some tips towards having a fun event while also being a good steward to the environment:

  • Opt for reusable items in tableware, cutlery, flatware, glasses, dishes, linens and more. Many party services offer these quality items as a rental. As an added bonus they will often help with setup, takedown, pickup and cleaning.

  • If going through a party rental is cost prohibitive think of investing in used, fun, mismatched items for continued use in the future. Also consider your favorite thrift shop as a resource instead of purchasing new items.

  • Give Back - create a community resource by loaning these items out for collective parties and celebrations.

  • If all of the above options are not possible purchase products that are plant based from both sustainable and renewable resources that can be composted.

  • Say no to plastic. No plastic bottles, drinks, tableware, packaging or giveaways.

  • Offer filling stations.

  • Compost - have clearly marked easy to follow compost stations. These are a growing trend even in restaurants.

  • Only provide things that are compostable or recyclable, eliminate the need for a trash station.

  • Establish expectations for guests in advance. Clearly state on invites: bring your own water bottles | filling stations will be available | zero-waste event | everything is compostable!
